Oscar-winning actress Julie Andrews’ comments follow Trump’s announcement Thursday that he will withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. In making the announcement, he cast the decision as one that puts the United States first — a central theme of his campaign and his presidency.
“In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord,” Trump said in a sunny outdoor ceremony at the White House Rose Garden.
Calling herself “deeply disturbed” by Trump’s decision, Andrews wrote, “We’ve been given stewardship of this magnificent planet… shouldn’t we all share the responsibility for its protection and preservation?”
Andrews is known for her iconic roles in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. She was a 2001 Kennedy Center honoree, a Disney Legend inductee and the recipient of a SAG Life Achievement Award. She is also known for her longtime activism promoting LGBT rights, and has previously spoken out against Trump’s proposed cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts.
