Former Va. Gov. is newest entrant in GOP field

Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore has filed paperwork to enter the increasingly crowded GOP presidential field, in what’s seen as a longshot bid.

Gilmore’s filing adds little detail outside of the name of his campaign committee: Gilmore for America LLC. But the official paperwork confirms that he’ll be a candidate.

The former governor and Republican National Committee chairman touted his experience in an interview with the Richmond Times-Dispatch earlier this month when he first declared his intention to run.

Gilmore has not been tested in many recent polls of the GOP field, but Tuesday’s Monmouth University poll of New Hampshire had him at less than 1 percent, while last week’s Public Policy Polling survey had him at less than 1 percent nationally.

He is the 17th prominent Republican to join the race for the White House.
