RNC co-chairwoman facing challenge
CHICAGO, Ill. — Republican National Committee Co-Chairwoman Sharon Day is facing a challenge for her position from RNC Secretary Demetra DeMonte, multiple sources confirm to The Hill.
{mosads}Day confirmed during a members-only meeting on Thursday morning at the RNC’s summer conference in Chicago that she planned to run for reelection as co-chairwoman, a position she’s held since 2011. Prior to that, Day, a committeewoman from Florida, served as RNC secretary.
According to sources in the room, DeMonte then asked to speak and announced plans to challenge Day for the position. The announcement came as a surprise to many.
DeMonte has served as RNC secretary since 2011, and was elected as Illinois’ Republican national committeewoman in 2008.
Neither Day nor DeMonte responded to requests for comment.
