Obama’s charity state

President Obama made a big to-do about a big speech about his allegedly big new plan to reduce the really big deficit and fix the country the way a president is supposed to. Predictably, he dusted off old far-left mantras as tired as Joe Biden at an Obama speech, spouting yet again that the way to end deficits is to raise taxes. 

The rhetoric on the left is getting more shrill by the minute, with accusations of Republicans wanting to “steal” from poor people, women and senior citizens. Yes — “steal” — as if there is money that is theirs and mean old Republicans want to break into their homes in the middle of the night and lift it from their wallets.

{mosads}The nation is in a crisis. The left is blind to that crisis. We are broke, in frighteningly deep debt, and are less than a generation away from not being able to do much of anything for anybody — especially those who need help the most. But many Democrats don’t care about those future generations. Democrats care only about those who can vote for them now. If they truly cared so much about the poor, they would care about the poor in the tomorrows of the nation’s future. And we will always have the poor. History and the Bible tell us so. We need to ensure we also always have innovative successful people willing to take risks who will continue to try to create jobs. If we overtax them, they cannot.

We are a generous nation. Americans help those who are going through a difficult time until they can get back on their feet. There was a time when such help by American taxpayers was referred to as “being on charity,” and it was considered a blessing. A temporary blessing. It was part of what made this a great country. We later started calling it the somewhat chillier “government relief,” and then the more sterile “public assistance.” Now it is something to which many feel entitled from cradle to grave, never being on their feet to begin with, making “getting back on their feet” a nonstarter. We are now at a point where easing back on the charity is viewed as “stealing.” In fact, raising taxes on someone — even someone who earns more money than most of us — to give to someone else is actual stealing. Perhaps Obama and the far left can start referring to tax hikes as “compulsory charity” in order to sugarcoat what is really going on. 

Nearly half of American households — 47 percent — pay no federal income tax whatsoever. Raising that number to over 50 percent by increasing the number of poor and getting them to vote appears to be the Democrats’ election strategy. But a new Gallup poll shows that even among the nation’s poor, Obama’s approval numbers are below 50 percent. Perhaps the poor would rather have jobs and pay taxes after all, than live in Obama’s America, where taxing and spending away the future and growing a permanent class of citizens (and non-citizens) dependent on “compulsory charity” seems more like a nightmare than the American Dream.

Democrats refuse to peer down the road and see the damage they are doing. While accusing Republicans of somehow taking something from others, Democrats have no qualms about stealing from future generations that have only the Republicans looking out for them before they even arrive.

Republicans should calculate what their long-term deficit-reduction plan costs your newborn baby or grandchild, versus what the Obama spending plan costs that same baby. Like Adam and Eve’s original sin from Garden of Eden shenanigans with a snake, we are burdening each new soul with original debt at its birth. Our spending sins caused this, and the immorality of deficits and growing debt is staggering. 

Since the job creation and economic effects of Obama’s much-ballyhooed “stimulus package” that cost us a cool $787 billion are essentially nonexistent, we are running out of pockets to pick. Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, shame on us. The utter lack of leadership from this president is appalling, but hardly surprising. He spent our money and failed to create jobs. We need to stop him from taking more money from actual job-creators. We need to take the checkbook away from Obama and congressional Democrats.
