Prince Charles, sons show support for Ukraine

Members of Great Britain’s royal family are denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and showing support for Ukraine, adding to the number of high-profile celebrities and officials speaking out amid the conflict.

In a speech on Tuesday, Prince Charles called the Russian invasion “brutal aggression” and said his family stood in solidarity with those resisting it.

Prince William and Catherine, the duchess of Cambridge, also said they stood in solidarity with Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion.

“In October 2020 we had the privilege to meet [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and the first lady to learn of their hope and optimism for Ukraine’s future,” the two tweeted on Saturday. “Today we stand with the President and all of Ukraine’s people as they bravely fight for that future W & C.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the couple for their support in a tweet on Tuesday. 

“Olena and I are grateful to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge @RoyalFamily that at this crucial time, when Ukraine is courageously opposing Russia’s invasion, they stand by our country and support our brave citizens. Good will triumph,” he tweeted.

Prince Harry and Meghan, duke and duchess of Sussex, said in a statement last Thursday on their website Archewell that they also supported Ukraine and called the invasion a “breach of international and humanitarian law.”

“Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this breach of international and humanitarian law and encourage the global community and its leaders to do the same,” the statement read.
