Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) appeared at an Alexandria grocery store Thursday to discuss his plan to eliminate the state’s grocery tax, where a woman confronted him for not wearing a mask.

“Governor, where’s your mask?” she asked in a video posted by a WUSA reporter.

Youngkin responded, “We’re all making choices today.”

“Yeah, look around you governor, you’re in Alexandria,” the woman shouted. “Read the room, buddy!”

Youngkin held a discussion at the Safeway about his plans to counter inflation by removing the “regressive” Virginia grocery task, according to The Washington Post.

“Today is about tackling the high costs in Virginia — the high costs I believe are unnecessarily borne by those that can afford it the least,” Youngkin said.

“People talk about the supply chain disruption, but we’re just seeing added costs in the supply chain as well,” he added.

Youngkin plans to cut the 2.5 percent tax on groceries in Virginia as well as the gasoline tax. He has also said he wants to issue one-time tax rebates and double the state’s standard income tax deduction.

“Virginia should be the best place in America to live and work and raise a family,” Youngkin said to his constituents, according to the Post.

The grocery tax cut supported by Youngkin has received bipartisan support, including by his predecessor, former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D).

The majority of Alexandria County residents voted for Youngkin’s Democratic opponent, former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, in the 2021 state gubernatorial election. Youngkin won 24 percent of the county’s vote, according to CNN.
