More than two-thirds of voters say US on wrong track one year into Biden presidency: poll

More than two-thirds of voters questioned in a new survey said the U.S. is on the wrong track one year after President Biden was sworn in.

According to the Morning Consult-Politico poll, 68 percent of respondents said that the country is going down the wrong path, while only 32 percent said the U.S. is heading in the right direction.

Additionally, 41 percent said they approve of the job Biden is doing in the Oval Office and 56 percent disapprove. Four percent said they didn’t know or didn’t have an opinion.

Biden has been struggling with poll numbers the past few months as coronavirus cases have surged, inflation has risen and Democrats have worked to get voting rights legislation through Congress.

His approval rating first began to plummet during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August, when 13 Americans were killed. 

Former President Trump is the only president to have had a lower approval rating in his first year of office. 

Economic issues such as taxes and jobs were at the top of voters’ minds in the new poll, with 42 percent saying they think about the economy when casting their vote. Security issues, including the border, trailed at 14 percent.

On issues such as jobs and the economy, more respondents also said they would trust Republicans in Congress to handle their concerns more than Democrats.

The results come as both parties are gearing up for contentious midterm elections in November as Democrats look to maintain their slim majorities in the House and Senate.

The poll was conducted from Jan. 15 to Jan. 16 and surveyed 2,005 registered voters. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
