Grand jury indicts Robert Durst in murder of his wife

A grand jury in New York has charged millionaire Robert Durst with the murder of his first wife, Kathleen Durst, who disappeared in January 1982 and was declared legally dead in 2017.

Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah announced the indictment in a statement on Monday, adding that there was a warrant out for Durst’s arrest.

“For nearly four decades there has been a great deal of speculation about this case, much of it fueled by Robert Durst’s own highly publicized statements,” Rocah said in the statement. “An indictment is a crucial step in the process of holding wrongdoers accountable for their actions.”

In October, Durst, 78, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Susan Berman in 2000.

He was convicted of first-degree murder in September after prosecutors argued that he killed Berman because she planned to go to the police regarding a phony alibi she gave for him at the time of his wife’s disappearance.

Durst’s lawyers have said they plan to appeal the sentence. During that trial, Durst denied murdering his wife.

His case was also the subject of a 2015 HBO series titled “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.” While filming that series, Durst was heard via live mic while he was in a bathroom saying, “What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.” He was first arrested and charged later that year.
