Power outages Monday are affecting tens of thousands of people in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The power outages, which are focused on St. Thomas and St. John, were caused by failures in power plant generators on the U.S. territory, but the cause of the failures in the generators is not clear, according to officials, The Associated Press reported.

The outage started before dawn on Monday and have continued into mid-afternoon. There are 54,000 residents between the two islands experiencing the outages.

The Virgin Islands are experiencing severe heat, with 90-degree weather. High humidity is also making the air feel even hotter, according to the AP.

Hurricane Ida left 1 million people without power in Louisiana. Power has been restored to many since the Category 4 hurricane devastated the state, but DEMCO energy company said it could be a “weeks long process” before more see their power recovered.

It is not clear how long it will be before power will return to residents of St. Thomas and St. John.
