Wales soccer captian proposes banning fans or countries from competing for repeat racial abuse

Wales soccer captain Gareth Bale on Saturday proposed to ban fans or international teams from competing if there is repeated racial abuse at games.

“I don’t know the severity of what to do to but the easiest thing is … whether you ban the fans from the stadium or if they keep repeatedly doing it, which seems to be what is happening, then you ban the country from the competition,” the 32-year-old Real Madrid player stated, Reuters reported.

His comments come after Hungary fans at a game Thursday were using “monkey chants” and throwing plastic cups at Black players from England after celebrating goals. 

“If that country keeps making these horrible gestures, then maybe the best thing to do is to get rid of them, give them a suspension and hopefully they will learn their lesson that way,” Bale said.

There have been disciplinary proceedings started due to the game by FIFA as Black English players have been facing a slew of racist comments since the Euro 2020 championship.

Bale said his team is prepared to walk out of a game if racial abuse is heard towards players.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto condemned racism at the game Saturday but decried the description it was a “racist and hostile” environment, according to Reuters.

“We certainly need to take steps against certain statements, but it is nonsense to label the behaviour of sixty or seventy thousand people based on that,” Szijjarto said.

The United Kingdom saidnafter the Euro 2020 Championship they would ban fans with a history of online racial abuse from attending the games.
