  • An Afghan woman went into labor while aboard an evacuation flight on Saturday.
  • She began to experience complications due to low blood pressure, so the aircraft descended in altitude.
  • U.S. airmen boarded the plane when it landed and delivered the baby safely in the cargo area.

An Afghan woman went into labor while aboard an evacuation flight on Saturday and U.S. airmen delivered her baby, according to U.S. Air Mobility Command.

The unidentified woman was on a U.S. C-17 aircraft headed to Ramstein Air Base in Germany when she began to go into labor, the command wrote on Facebook.

Because the woman began to experience complications due to low blood pressure, “the aircraft commander made the decision to descend in altitude to increase air pressure in the aircraft, which helped stabilize and save the mother’s life,” said the U.S Air Mobility Command said.

Once the aircraft landed, airmen with the 86th Medical Group came aboard and delivered the baby in the cargo bay. The woman and her newborn baby girl were transported to a nearby hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Thousands are attempting to flee Afghanistan as the Taliban has taken over since the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Many of those fleeing are women and girls under severe threat of being kidnapped, sex trafficked, beaten and killed, as they are often prevented from socializing, being out in public alone or attending school.
