Soccer fans in London trash streets ahead of Euro 2020 final

Bottles, glass and other debris littered the ground at Leicester Square in London as fans congregated before the Euro 2020 championship game between England and Italy on Sunday.

A video of the event in Leicester Square shows people throwing bottles and other projectiles, some of which cracked glass at a nearby building. The video also shows a man throwing a large yellow cone over his head.

London’s Metropolitan Police Service were aware of the scenes unfolding and asked fans to people themselves safe.

“Streets around Piccadilly Circus & Leicester Square are busy with fans. We have officers on hand. We’d urge everyone to keep themselves safe and look out for each other. We’ve seen people jumping off street lamps or hoardings, this could easily end in injury,” police tweeted.

Meanwhile police reported that in the afternoon there had been a “breach of security,” “which resulted in a small number of people getting into the stadium without a ticket,” according to the BBC.

“Officers worked closely with security officials to prevent any further breaches,” the police said in a statement.  “We will also support action by Wembley Stadium officials to identify those without tickets and eject them.”

A spokesperson for the stadium said that officials were working with police to get the “small group of people” out of the sports venue, the BBC reported.

The Football Association confirmed to CNN that the event happened at the stadium’s outer security perimeter.

“Safety measures were quickly activated in the relevant areas and there were no security breaches of people without tickets getting inside the stadium,” the association said.
