In a court filing, India’s government says Twitter can no longer have liability protections for content created by its users in the country, Reuters reported Tuesday.

India’s IT Ministry in the filing said Twitter had lost protections under the country’s information technology law because it had failed to comply with the law’s provisions

The Hill has reached out to Twitter for comment.

The court filing was based on a Twitter user in the country who complained about seeing allegedly defamatory posts on the social media platform, adding that the company wasn’t complying to the new laws established, according to Reuters.

This comes as India has set new rules in May that are aimed at regulating content on social media platforms and enforcing legal requests for platforms to remove posts that violate their new law.

India technology minister Ravi Shankar criticized Twitter for repeatedly “defying” the new law, Reuters noted.

Indian authorities have already filed five cases against the company and its officials over complaints of child pornography and a controversial map of India on its career page, Reuters reported.
