Family: Grandparents who died in Florida building collapse were found together in bed

An older couple who lived in the condo building that collapsed last week died in their bed together, their grandson says.

Antonio Lozano, 83, and Gladys Lozano, 79, were among the first to be found following the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condo building in Surfside, Fla.

The couple was set to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary in July.

“They couldn’t stand a moment without each other. To this day, I never saw them apart,” their grandson Brian Lozano told NBC Miami.

The grandson said that the fact they had been some of the first people identified following the tragedy gave him peace.

“I’m finally at peace and I really hope for other families to finally get that sense of peace knowing that I got that sense of closure,” Brian Lozano said.

The couple had said they did not want either one to die before the other, their son Sergio Lozano said, according to NBC News.

Sergio Lozano, who lives in another tower within the condo structure that did not fall, said that just hours before the collapse he was having dinner with his parents.

He told local news station WPLG that after hearing a large noise nearby he went to bring in furniture from his balcony, thinking it was a tornado or windstorm, when he noticed the collapsed tower.

“My wife was walking behind me because she was going to help me move the furniture,” Sergio Lozano told the outlet.

“And I tell her, ‘It’s not there.’ And she’s yelling, ‘What do you mean?’ ‘My parents apartment is not there, it’s gone!,’ and I just ran downstairs,” he added.

More than 100 people remain unaccounted for more than a week after the the Surfside, Fla., building collapsed, and at least 20 deaths have been confirmed as of Friday afternoon.
