Man wounded in shooting in Times Square

A 21-year-old man was shot in the back in Times Square on Sunday night.

The shooting took place at approximately 5:15 p.m. in the area of West 47th Street and 7th Avenue, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

“The suspect discharged a firearm, striking a 21-year-old male bystander in the back,” the NYPD wrote.

The man was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition, the department told The Hill in a statement.

He is expected to survive after enduring a non-life-threatening wound, an NYPD spokesperson told The Hill.

The bystander was reportedly caught in a dispute between a group of men that he did not know, according to CNN, citing an NYPD spokesperson.

The NYPD is now searching for the suspect. The department posted a photo and video of the alleged shooter on Twitter, with the caption “WANTED for Assault” offering a reward of up to $3,500.

According to the NYPD’s crime stats database, 680 shooting incidents have occurred this year as of June 20.

The incident comes after the suspect in the May 8 shooting in Times Square, which left three people injured, was charged with attempted murder.

Police said at the time of the incident that the victims, a 4-year-old girl, a 23-year-old woman and a 44-year-old woman, were not intended targets.
