The White House is set to announce Tuesday that more than 70 percent of Americans 30 and over have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
The Biden administration expects to miss the president’s larger goal of partially vaccinating 70 percent of eligible Americans by July 4, but new White House data suggests that the U.S. is on pace to give at least one shot to 70 percent of adults 27 and older, The Associated Press (AP) reported. A White House official told the AP that the administration is refocusing efforts on vaccinating young people ages 18 to 26.
“The reality is, many younger Americans have felt like COVID-19 is not something that impacts them and have been less eager to get the shot,” head of the White House response Jeff Zients said in advance remarks obtained by NBC News.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that the U.S. is just shy of the president’s goal. More than 65 percent of adults have received at least one shot, while nearly 53 percent — approximately 150 million people — are fully vaccinated.
“We always intended July 4 as a moment to take stock and celebrate the progress we’ve made. But by no means was it an end point,” a senior administration official told NBC.
“What really matters is what the country feels like and what Americans are safely able to do. Restaurants and schools have been able to reopen. There will be celebrations that are very different than what we talked about even a few weeks ago.”
