Cheney: McCarthy should ‘absolutely’ testify before Jan. 6 commission
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) should “absolutely” testify before the commission that was made to look into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
“He absolutely should and I wouldn’t be surprised if he were subpoenaed,” Cheney said in a preview clip of her interview on ABC News’s “This Week” that will air Sunday.
“I think he very clearly and said publicly that he’s got information about the president’s state of mind that day,” Cheney added.

Cheney was voted out of her leadership position in the House on Wednesday with McCarthy supporting her removal after she continued to criticize former President Trump and others who have pushed election fraud conspiracy theories.
The bipartisan Jan. 6 commission was announced Friday; five Democrats and five Republicans will be investigating the events that occurred leading up to the Capitol attack.
“The elements of that commission are exactly as they should be. I’m very glad they rejected Leader McCarthy’s suggestions that somehow we should dilute the commission,” Cheney said.
McCarthy attempted to expand the commission to include violence that occurred at some Black Lives Matter protests last summer and the attack on the Capitol on Good Friday during which an officer was killed.
She said she hopes McCarthy “doesn’t require a subpoena” to testify; however, she “wouldn’t be surprised” if he did.
McCarthy told reporters Friday that he has not completely read the bill to create the commission yet and has therefore not signed off on it.
