Journalist Zaid Jilani joined Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Monday to discuss a controversy surrounding Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Mulan,” which used footage shot in the Xinjiang province of China during its production and contained a short message thanking authorities in the area in its end credits.
Xinjiang and China at large have come over fierce international criticism over the treatment minority Uygurs in the region.
Jilani said that Disney’s response to the matter did not hold water, with the company arguing that a Chinese production company it partnered with to produce footage shot in China made the decision to film in Xinjiang.
“It wasn’t really [Disney’s] decision to film there, is what they were saying. Obviously it was their decision to use the footage,” Jilani said.
“They certainly were under no obligation to use the footage, even if they didn’t choose the location,” he added.
