The Biden administration’s two rumored candidates for a nomination to lead the Justice Department’s antitrust division are divided over their approaches to taking on big tech companies, The Intercept’s Ryan Grim said Tuesday.
During an interview on Hill.TV’s “Rising,” Grim explained how the two nominees, progressive Jonathan Kanter and the more centrist Jonathan Sallet, differ in their wilingness to work with their political foes on the issue.
“The strength of the antitrust movement so far has been its kind of trans-partisan, bipartisan nature, where you have ultra-conservatives like [Sen.] Ted Cruz [R-Texas] on one side and then you have, you know, strongly progressive people like Lena Khan, who [President] Biden nominated to the [Federal Trade Commission], on the other,” said Grim.
“It’s that bipartisan nature that gives it its strength. Kanter is for that, Sallet however…has been discouraging other Democratic states from joining the Republican effort.”
