Five people shot in Shreveport

Five people were shot in Shreveport, La., late Sunday evening in the third mass shooting in the U.S. in just 24 hours.

Reuters reported that five people were hospitalized in Shreveport, including one man who was shot in the head. The condition of the victims was not immediately known.

The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. local time. Officers were nearby responding to traffic congestion when they heard shots fired.

“We responded this evening to a traffic congestion and during that congestion, numerous shots were fired,” a police spokesperson said at a press conference.

It wasn’t clear Monday morning whether a suspect was in custody or whether the shooting was believed to be isolated.

The Hill has reached out to Shreveport police for comment.

Sunday evening’s shooting came on the heels of two others in Somers, Wis., and Austin, Texas, that killed at least six people in total.

The shooting at a tavern in Somers Saturday evening left three dead and three others wounded and one suspect captured, according to Kenosha County officials.

In Texas, a former deputy with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office is accused of killing three people in Austin.

The shootings have renewed calls among activists for action on gun violence, a prospect that is supported by President Biden and congressional Democrats but faces an uncertain path ahead given the split 50-50 control of the Senate between Republicans and Democrats.
