At least 8 dead in shooting at Indianapolis FedEx facility

At least eight people were killed and several others injured late Thursday in a mass shooting at an Indianapolis FedEx facility.

Indianapolis police said the shooter took his own life and there is “no active threat to the community at this time,” according to The Associated Press.

In a press conference, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Genae Cook early Friday said at least four people have been transported to a local hospital with injuries, and one person was in critical condition. Three others had other injuries, and two others were treated at the facility.

Cook also said that authorities were aware that “multiple other people” had walked into local hospitals for injuries. The department is continuing to reach out to identify other victims.

Cook said police arrived at the FedEx facility at roughly 11 p.m. Thursday to an active shooter incident.

Authorities are still trying to figure out a motive. Cook said the investigation will continue “throughout the day.”

In a press conference later Friday morning, Deputy Police Chief Craig McCartt said that officials “have not made a positive identification” for the suspect.

Alfarena McGinty, deputy coroner for Marion County, said the coroner’s office is also not able to go onto the scene to confirm the identities of the suspect or victims.

McCartt said the suspect went to the facility, got out of his car and “pretty quickly” started shooting.

“There was no confrontation with anyone that was there, there was no disturbance, there was no argument. He just appeared to randomly start shooting,” he said.

The suspect then entered the facility and was in there for a “brief time,” roughly a couple minutes, before he took his life, McCartt said. Officers entered the facility moments later.

FedEx said in a statement on Friday that it was “deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis.”

“Our most heartfelt sympathies are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence. The safety of our team members is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities,” the company said.

The shooting comes weeks after a shooting at a King Sooper’s Grocery Store in Colorado killed 10 people in late March.
