Mayor calls for police accountability after second night of protests over Daunte Wright killing

The mayor of Brooklyn Center, Minn., called for police accountability on Tuesday after protests continued for a second night following the police shooting death of Daunte Wright on Sunday.

In an interview with the “Today” show, Mayor Mike Elliot said that officials were still determining whether the officer who shot Wright, 20, would face charges.

“Whenever, through the line of duty, someone kills another human being, there must be accountability,” Elliot said.

“This is a tragedy for our city, for our community, and in fact for our nation,” he added.

Elliot’s interview followed a second night of demonstrations in Brooklyn Center, a city bordering Minneapolis, over Wright’s death during a traffic stop Sunday. Police said Wright was trying to reenter his vehicle as officers prepared to handcuff him.

The city’s police chief said at a press conference following the shooting that the 26-year department veteran who shot Wright, Kim Potter, mistakenly grabbed her handgun instead of a Taser before opening fire.

Elliot has called for her to be fired.
