Jill Biden gives shout out to Champ, Major on National Pet Day

First lady Jill Biden marked National Pet Day on Sunday on social media with photos of her and President Biden’s German shepherds, Champ and Major.

The first dogs made headlines in March when they were moved to the Biden family home in Delaware after Major demonstrated aggressive behavior at the White House, biting a security team member. 

The dogs returned to the White House later that month, but Major was reportedly involved in another biting incident at the White House following their return. 

The first lady’s press secretary Michael LaRosa told CNN following the second incident, “Yes, Major nipped someone on a walk. Out of an abundance of caution, the individual was seen by [the White House Medical Unit] and then returned to work.” 

Major, 3, was adopted by the first family in 2018. He has reportedly received training after the first aggressive incident.

Following the incident, Biden told “Good Morning America” during an interview that “Major did not bite someone and penetrate the skin.” 

“I guess what surprised me is the White House itself, living there. Every door you turn to, there’s a guy there in a black jacket,” Biden continued.

“You turn a corner, and there’s two people you don’t know at all,” he added. “And he moves to protect.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in an interview earlier this month that he gets along “just fine” with Major. 

“First time I went in for an Oval Office meeting, Major was there and said a quick hello. We got along pretty well,” Buttigieg told TMZ’s Harvey Levin.  

“I know there’ve been some stories about him,” Buttigieg said. “But my interactions with him have been great.”
