Lone survivor of mass shooting tied to former NFL player dies
The sole survivor of a mass shooting in South Carolina linked to a former NFL player died Saturday, officials said.
The Associated Press reported that 38-year-old Robert Shook died Saturday after spending roughly two days fighting for his life at a Charlotte, N.C.-area hospital.
Police say that former NFL player Phillip Adams shot six people at the home of prominent physician Robert Lesslie on Thursday, with one person briefed on the investigation telling the news service that Adams was formerly treated by Lesslie. A motive has not been announced.
Five people died at the scene, including Lesslie and two grandchildren under the age of 10. Adams later died from suicide, authorities said.
Adams played in nearly 80 professional football games over his career, and the AP reports that his brain will be investigated to see if it shows evidence of a degenerative disease linked to concussions called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Adams suffered two concussions over a three-game period in 2012, the AP noted.
Adams’s agent, Scott Casterline, told the AP that his client must not have “been in the right mind” when the shooting occurred.
“This is so unlike him. He had to not be in his right mind, obviously,” Casterline said after the shooting Thursday.
“We encouraged him to explore all of his disability options and he wouldn’t do it,” Casterline added. “I knew he was hurting and missing football but he wouldn’t take health tips offered to him. He said he would but he wouldn’t.”
