Pelosi planned on retiring until Trump won election: report

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was planning on retiring from public life until former President Trump won the 2016 election, according to USA Today.

“After three decades as a congresswoman from California, nearly half of that time as the leader of the House Democrats, Pelosi said she was getting ready to take a breath, dote on her nine grandchildren, perhaps write her memoirs,” Susan Page of USA Today writes in her upcoming book “Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power.”

The book consists of 10 interviews with Pelosi and 150 interviews from political friends and foes and family members close to her.

The book details Pelosi’s confidence that former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 election.

Pelosi’s plans were to retire from her long tenure in office after Clinton became president, as she would be confident her policies would be protected by the new commander in chief.

Pelosi told Page that the shock she felt when Trump won the presidency “was physical; it was actually physical.” 

Even though she did have plans to retire if Clinton won, some of those closest to her doubted that she would go through with it. 

Pelosi was the highest-ranking woman the history of the U.S. government until Kamala Harris was inaugurated as the vice president in January.

It is not clear if Pelosi has any plans to retire soon.
