Chicago Police to release body cam footage following fatal shooting of 13-year-old boy

Chicago Police are set to release body camera footage connected to the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy this week, following calls from city officials, the boy’s family and the mayor for answers.

Adam Toledo was allegedly shot and killed by law enforcement on Monday following an “armed confrontation.”

The officer involved in the shooting, who has not been named, has been placed on desk duty for 30 days as the incident is investigated.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) announced Friday that video footage of the incident would be released “as soon as possible.”

“COPA has determined that certain provisions of state law intended to protect the confidentiality of juvenile records do not prohibit the agency’s release of material related to its investigation of a Chicago Police Officer’s fatal shooting of 13-year old Adam Toledo,” the agency wrote in a press release. 

“COPA is currently working with the Toledo family and their representative to arrange for a review of the troubling video footage.”

COPA’s decision comes after community members and Adam’s family called on the Chicago Police for answers, The Washington Post reported. Elizabeth Toledo, Adam’s mother, was reportedly notified of her son’s death on Wednesday, two days after the shooting.

“I just want to know what really happened to my baby,” Elizabeth Toledo said during a press conference on Friday, an ABC affiliate reported.

Adam is reportedly one of the youngest people to be fatally shot by a Chicago Police officer since 2015, according to the Post.
