The American Prospect’s executive editor discusses growing backlash against targeted advertising

The executive editor of The American Prospect, David Dayen, joined Hill.TV’s “Rising” on Thursday to discuss how targeted ads are facing growing opposition from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Speaking with hosts Saagar Enjeti and Krystal Ball, Dayen pointed to work by the House Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law on the issue as a rare issue of bipartisan agreement in Washington.

“In the Antitrust subcommittee you have Democrats and Republicans working together on various strategies to weaken the power of big tech, and this is an area where they could make some headway,” Dayen said.

He went on to contend that the benefits from data collection used for targeted advertising were outweighed by the risks, which he said included data breaches as well as discrimination by private companies.
