US ambassador to Vietnam releases rap ahead of Lunar New Year
U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink released a new rap song and accompanying music video sending families in the country well wishes ahead of the Lunar New Year.
“Time for introductions are at hand. Hi, my name is Dan. I’m from Nebraska. I’m not a big city boy. Then three years ago, I moved to Hanoi,” the ambassador raps in English and Vietnamese in the song released Monday.
The Lunar New Year is known as Tết in Vietnam
While holding red envelopes traditionally given to children, family members and others during Lunar New Year celebrations, he promises “cash for the kids, blessings for the family, love for my parents and everyone around me.”
The video was produced by Ho Chi Minh City media company Vietcetera, The Washington Post reported. It also features Kritenbrink working on his rhymes with Vietnamese rapper Wowy.
“From my shores to your shores, our friendship endures. U.S. and Vietnam, from now to forever, we’re trusted partners prospering together,” the ambassador raps, calling himself “your boy in Hanoi.”
At the end of the video, Kritenbrink is seen sending the video to Binz, a Vietnamese rapper who is featured as a coach for contestants on the popular television show “Rap Viet.”
Kritenbrink in the song also mentions other traditions for the holiday such as cleaning the home and gathering with friends and loved ones. Tết begins on Friday.
