READ: Democrats ask Trump to testify under oath

House impeachment managers sent a letter to former President Trump on Thursday asking him to testify under oath in the Senate impeachment trial.

Trump’s lawyers have denied that Trump, who spoke at a rally in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, is directly at fault for inciting that day’s Capitol riot. The article of impeachment that passed the House accuses Trump of inciting insurrection with his remarks.

“If you decline this invitation, we reserve any and all rights, including the right to establish at trial that your refusal to testify supports a strong adverse inference regarding your actions (and inaction) on January 6, 2021,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the Democrats’ lead impeachment manager, wrote in the letter to Trump.

The letter asks Trump to provide testimony, including cross-examination, by Feb. 11. The impeachment trial is set to begin Monday.

Trump, who did not testify at his first impeachment trial, has until Friday to respond.
