Parents of Sandy Hook victims released a statement condemning Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s appointment to the House Education and Labor Committee after the Georgia Republican pushed conspiracy theories that the shooting was a fake event.

“Having a Sandy Hook and Parkland denier on the House Education and Labor Committee is an attack on any and every family whose loved ones were murdered in mass shootings that have now become fodder for hoaxers,” the parents said.

Mark Barden, father of Daniel Barden, and Nicole Hockley, mother of Dylan Hockley, released the statement Thursday.

“We’re grateful for people like Rep. Jahana Hayes who understand that hateful conspiracy theories and suggestions that our childrens’ violent deaths never happened have no place in our society, much less the United States Congress,” they said, referring to the Democratic Connecticut congresswoman who represents the state where the shooting occurred.

The Sandy Hook shooting took place in 2012 and left 26 people dead, 20 children and six adults. Greene has repeatedly claimed that this shooting, along with the 2018 Parkland shooting in Florida, was staged.

Greene previously said she believed the Parkland shooting was orchestrated by Democrats to push gun-control laws.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) announced Wednesday that he would be introducing a resolution to remove Greene from the House.

Gomez cites the conspiracy theories Greene has pushed, along with recent reports that Greene supported a post on Facebook calling for violence against Democrats, as reasoning for his resolution.

Greene has stirred up controversy in Congress for her support of former President Trump’s election fraud claims and initially refusing to wear a mask. When she complied, she wore a mask that said “censorship” on the front.
