Mormon church congratulates Biden after Electoral College vote

Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congratulated President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris shortly after the Electoral College made their win official on Monday.

“We invite people everywhere, whatever their political views, to join us in praying for this new administration and for leaders of nations around the world,” the church wrote in a statement. “Praying for those in public office has been a practice of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since its founding. The men and women who lead our nations and communities need our prayers.

The statement also thanked President Trump and Vice President Pence for their public service. The church released a similar message in 2016 when Trump won the election, which also commended Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton at the time.

“We also commend Secretary Hillary Clinton all those who engaged in the election process at a national or local level. Their participation in our democratic process, by its nature, demands much of those who offer themselves for public service,” the statement said in 2016.

The Electoral College cast their ballots on Monday, officially confirming Biden and Harris as the winning ticket in the 2020 presidential election.
