‘Election results’ top ‘coronavirus’ on 2020 list of top Google search terms

Google released its annual “Year in Search” list for 2020, with “election results” and “coronavirus” leading the pack.

“Election results” topped “coronavirus” in the searches and news categories in the U.S., where the pandemic and the November vote dominated the media all year.

Kobe Bryant was the third top search in the U.S. and globally. The late NBA star died in January in a helicopter crash that killed him and his daughter Gianna, along with seven others.

“Coronavirus update” and “Coronavirus symptoms” were also at the top of the U.S., while “Zoom” and “IPL” took top spots on the global searches list. The nation of Iran made the top five in the news category both in the U.S. and globally.

President-elect Joe Biden topped the people category of trends in the U.S., while Vice President-elect Kamala Harris came in third behind North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Also among the most-Googled people is Jacob Blake, a black man who survived being shot by police in Kenosha, Wis.

In a video accompanied with the list, Google said most people largely wanted to know the answer to “why,” asking questions such as “Why is the NBA postponed?” and “Why are people protesting?”
