Poll shows growing awareness of high-risk COVID-19 activities among Republicans

A new Axios-Ipsos poll released Tuesday shows a growing awareness of high-risk coronavirus activities among Republicans, particularly when it comes to indoor activities. 

According to the latest Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index, 52 percent of Republicans say that in-person gatherings are risky, up from 40 percent in late October. In addition, 45 percent of Republicans say that indoor dining is risky, up 8 percentage points. 

The poll comes as the U.S. experiences a resurgence in coronavirus cases ahead of the winter months. Experts have long warned of a surge this fall and winter as the colder weather forces people to spend more time indoors. 

Eighty-seven percent of Democrats said that in-person gatherings were high-risk, a small jump from the 83 percent who said that in the last survey. Overall, 39 percent of Americans say that attending indoor gatherings of family and friends would be high-risk. 

Thirty-nine percent of Americans also said they had visited their friends or family in the past week, and about 40 percent said they had gone out to eat. 

The poll also found that 61 percent of Americans said they would take a coronavirus vaccine that was at least 90 percent effective. 

The survey was conducted after Pfizer announced that its vaccine candidate was 90 percent effective against the virus. Since then, Moderna has said its vaccine is 94.5 percent effective. 

The poll surveyed 1,092 adults Nov. 13-16 and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
