Hurricane Delta makes landfall in Louisiana as Category 2 storm

Hurricane Delta made landfall in Louisiana on Friday evening as a Category 2 storm.

The storm hit the southwestern Louisiana coast just after 6 p.m. local time with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Creole, La., the area where the storm made landfall, is still reeling from damage from Hurricane Laura, which killed at least 27 people in August. Delta set a new record by becoming the 10th named storm to hit the continental United States this year.

The National Hurricane Center has warned of “significant flash flooding” during the storm, which weakened from when it was a Category 3 hurricane earlier this week over the Gulf of Mexico.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) announced that the state has activated more than 2,400 National Guard soldiers to help deal with the storm, and local agencies have been prepared to conduct secondary searches once it passes.
