Washington Post reporter Jeff Stein said Monday that the likelihood of the Trump administration authorizing another round of coronavirus stimulus checks will depend on who is placed in charge of the decision amid a split among officials.
“If it’s [Treasury Secretary Steven] Mnuchin’s call, you can probably bank on yourself getting another stimulus check,” Stein said on Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
Not everyone in the White House is in agreement with sending the additional checks, though, Stein noted.
Stein said there are “three main factions within the White House,” which he identified as “China Hawks,” led by trade adviser Peter Navarro, the “Wall Street-aligned faction,” including Mnuchin, and some “conservative Republicans,” including chief of staff Mark Meadows and acting director of the Office of Management and Budget Russell Vought.
“Right now, there’s a debate in the administration really between those second two camps,” Stein said.
“We’ve been told that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is in favor of sending another round of stimulus checks… but this conservative faction led by Meadows and Vought and other people … are much more skeptical of that idea and are just skeptical of the amount of spending that’s been authorized so far under Trump and worried about the rising deficit,” Stein said.
Most American adults received $1,200 as part of the coronavirus stimulus bill passed by Congress in March.
