Sunday shows preview: With coronavirus cases surging, lawmakers and health officials weigh in

The surge in coronavirus cases in certain U.S. states is expected to dominate the Sunday talk show circuit this weekend as state and federal lawmakers continue to address the pandemic and its economic consequences.

States like California, Texas, Arizona, Florida and Oklahoma have seen record-high spikes in cases as they began reopening this month.

The increases come as the president begun hosting in-person campaign rallies, which took place in Oklahoma and Arizona this month. 

Vice President Pence, who leads the White House coronavirus task force and has been criticized for the campaign’s rejection of public health guidelines, is booked on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, also a member of the task force, is booked on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

As a result of the spike in cases, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut have issued a mandatory 14-day quarantine for anyone visiting from states experiencing an influx of infections. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y) is booked on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

On Friday the House passed Historic legislation that would make Washington, D.C., its own state, granting the city equal representation in the Congress. Democratic Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D.C.), who introduced the legislation, is booked on “Fox News Sunday.” 

The bill faces significant opposition from Republicans in the Senate.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), who gave a controversial speech on the floor of the Senate on Thursday opposing the legislation, said that Washington wouldn’t be a “well-rounded working-class state.”  He is booked on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Former national security adviser John Bolton this week released a tell-all memoir, “The Room Where It Happened,” despite the Trump administration’s efforts to block it. Bolton is booked on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
