Netflix’s ‘Big Mouth’ to replace Jenny Slate as voice of biracial character

Netflix’s animated show “Big Mouth” will recast a biracial character voiced by white actress Jenny Slate with a Black actress, co-creator Nick Kroll announced Wednesday.

“After thoughtful discussion with us and our Black collaborators, Jenny Slate has decided, and we wholeheartedly agree, that Missy on ‘Big Mouth’ should be voiced by a Black actor,” Kroll said in a statement he tweeted Wednesday, which was also signed by co-creators Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett.

Kroll also apologized for the casting of a white actress as the character.

“We made a mistake, took our privilege for granted and we’re working hard to do better moving forward,” he said.

“We are proud of the representation that Missy has offered cerebral, sensitive women of color, and we plan to continue that representation and further grow Missy’s character as we recast a new Black actor to play her,” he added. “We thank Jenny for her decision and for creating with us an inspiring, compassionate, and very human character.”

With protests continuing across the nation against police brutality and racism, numerous media organizations and platforms have announced changes or alterations to race-related content.

Tina Fey announced several episodes of the NBC comedy “30 Rock” featuring actors Jon Hamm and Jane Krakowski in blackface will be removed from Hulu, while HBO Max briefly removed “Gone with the Wind,” which has been criticized for decades over its portrayal of slavery and the antebellum South, before restoring it with an introduction contextualizing it.
