The Intercept’s founding editor Glenn Greenwald said Thursday that Democrats should not be seeking an endorsement for presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden from former President George W. Bush amid reports that Bush will refuse to back President Trump.
“I think one of the things you’re seeing playing out is old politics versus new politics. For decades in Washington bipartisanship was kind of the golden ring,” Greenwald said in an interview with The Hill.TV’s “Rising.”
“I think what the 2016 election proved that people still haven’t internalized, at least people in Washington, is that those old rules don’t really apply anymore,” he added. “You had a Republican nominee who ran against the Bush family and the signature policies of the Bush administration and won not just the general election but the Republican primary. Republican voters cheered him as he condemned George Bush and the Bush family.”
Greenwald’s comments come after a New York Times report that the former president won’t support Trump’s reelection. A spokesman for Bush, however, pushed back on the report, saying was “completely made up.”
“He is retired from presidential politics and has not indicated how he will vote,” the spokesman said.
