George Floyd’s brother says he believes Derek Chauvin’s motivation was ‘personal’

Philonise Floyd told lawmakers Wednesday he believes former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s motivation to hold his knee on his brother George Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes was “personal.”

Floyd testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday morning in the Capitol about the need for police reform after his brother died at the hands of Minneapolis police on Memorial Day.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) asked Floyd during the hearing if he could think of a reason why Chauvin would hold his knee on his brother’s neck for so long.

“No, sir. I don’t really know why he did it,” Floyd answered. “But personally, I think it was personal because they worked at the same place. So for him to do something like that, it had to be premeditated.”

George Floyd and Chauvin worked security at the same nightclub for years before their deadly encounter. 

 “I know that he knew him,” Philonise Floyd said Wednesday during the hearing. “Everybody knew him … And it has to be racist. It has to be something to do with racism.”

Chauvin was caught on camera kneeling on Floyd’s neck. The incident sparked widespread outrage and large-scale protests against police brutality and racial injustice across the country.
