Sunday shows preview: Lawmakers, health officials address fallout from coronavirus pandemic

Lawmakers and health officials are set to dominate the Sunday show circuit to address the economic and physical fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

Federal and state governments are still grappling to curb the spread of the highly infectious virus and find ways to try to reboot a lagging economy that has been plagued by industry closures and unemployment spikes. 

States like New York, New Jersey and Michigan are dealing with exploding outbreaks of their own, and over 16 million Americans have filed for unemployment over the past three weeks, according to the Labor Department.  

Governors have scrambled to collect the necessary equipment to protect health care providers and obtain the tools necessary to deal with a rising number of patients. 

The Senate spent the week battling over a deal to provide hundreds of billions of dollars of new funding to small businesses, though plans from both sides were ultimately defeated over disagreements over extra funding for hospitals and state governments.

Stephen Hahn, Food and Drug Administration commissioner, will appear on ABC’s “This Week” and NBC’s “Meet the Press,” and David Nabarro, special envoy to the World Health Organization, will also appear on “Meet the Press.”

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert and a member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, will be featured on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D), whose state is experiencing the second-worst outbreaking the country, will appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and “State of the Union,” and a handful of congressional lawmakers are set to appear on a number of Sunday shows as well.
