Ben Carson says conditions for people detained at the border are ‘quite nice’

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said in a soon-to-be-released episode of “Axios on HBO” that the conditions for people who are detained at the Mexico border are “quite nice.”

“A lot of the people who have been detained there have been put into sprung structures and tent cities are actually quite nice,” Carson told Axios’s Jonathan Swan. Axios released a preview of the piece that will air Sunday.

Carson added that the structures had both air conditioning and heating and said that if those structures can have those features, then the U.S. should be able to build similar structures for the country’s homeless population.

When asked by Swan if these homeless facilities were currently available, Carson admitted that they still needed to be built.

Handling of immigrants at the border has been a contentious issue for the Trump administration, which has repeatedly faced criticism over its treatment of people seeking to enter the United States.

A U.S. court recently overturned one of its policies that made asylum-seekers stay in Mexico while they awaited their immigration trial.
