Redbox quietly rolls out free streaming service

Redbox, the service best known for DVD rental kiosks, has launched a companion online streaming service, adding a “Free Live TV” tab to its website.

The tab features shows such as “Family Feud” and “Forensic Files” in addition to content from sources like TMZ, USA Today reports, with the company planning to add original content as well.

The service is gradually being rolled out to Samsung, Vizio and LG, with plans to make it available on Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku in the months ahead, according to the newspaper.

The company previously attempted to launch a streaming service in 2013 and in 2017 launched the Redbox On Demand rental service that allows users to buy or rent premium content. The company announced expanded plans for development and funding of original content in 2019.
