2 top House Democrats throw support behind Harris
A pair of House Democratic leaders endorsed Vice President Harris’s White House bid Monday, adding to her momentum as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination.
House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) and Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) both threw their support behind Harris after President Biden decided to end his reelection bid Sunday.
“I know Kamala to be a fierce advocate for working families and a tough-minded prosecutor who knows right from wrong,” Aguilar said in a statement. “I ask every American who believes in the rule of law, supports our Democracy and wants to keep America a beacon of hope for future generations to join me in this fight.”
Clark shared a photo on social media of her and Harris hugging, captioned “Team Harris.”
Many Democrats have rallied around Harris in the wake of Biden ending his reelection campaign, including the president himself. Harris has quickly become the favorite for the nomination, with several top would-be challengers throwing their support behind the vice president.
Other top House Democrats, including Vice Chair Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Assistant Leader Joe Neguse (D-Colo.), have also endorsed Harris, while Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has not yet weighed in on who should be the party’s nominee.
