Jill Biden to lead presidential delegation to Paris Olympics

Jill Biden is headed to the Olympics, leading the presidential delegation to the Summer Games in Paris later this month.

The first lady will touch down in France for the opening ceremony July 26, the White House announced Friday.

It’s not the first time that Biden has attended an Olympics event: She led the U.S. delegation to the opening ceremony of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, which were postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff will head up the delegation at the closing ceremony in August, and Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) will lead the delegation for the opening of the Paralympic Games on Aug. 28. Duckworth is a military veteran who lost both of her legs when her helicopter was shot down over Iraq in 2004.

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra will represent the country at the closing of the Paralympic Games in September.

The White House said additional members of the presidential delegation would be announced in the future.
