Rose McGowan defends tweet apologizing to Iran: ‘I want America to be better’

Actress Rose McGowan defended her tweet in which she apologized to Iran for the U.S. airstrike that killed the country’s top military commander, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, in Baghdad on Thursday.

“I don’t support Iran over America. I want America to be better,” McGowan told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview Friday.

Earlier that day, McGowan tweeted, “Dear #Iran, The USA has disrespected your country, your flag, your people. 52% of us humbly apologize.”

Continuing, she added, “We want peace with your nation. We are being held hostage by a terrorist regime. We do not know how to escape. Please do not kill us.”

While defending her tweet, McGowan admitted to the AP that her tweet was unusual.

“I just thought I would do something a little strange or unusual … bloodshed should be avoided if you can,” she said. “And I kind of just thought, what if I take a really bizarre way around this. A very strange thought, I understand.”

The 46-year-old — best known for her role in the “Scream” movies — was one of the first women to accuse Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. Subsequently, McGowan became a major figure in the “Me Too” movement. She has reportedly filed a federal lawsuit against Weinstein and two of his former lawyers, citing that the trio tried to silence her and derail her career when she spoke out.
