Trump teases possible VP announcement during GOP convention

Former President Trump on Monday toyed with the prospect of announcing his running mate during next week’s Republican National Convention (RNC), though he conceded he may share his pick ahead of the GOP gathering.

Sources have told The Hill that Trump has narrowed his running mate search down to Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R). Trump, during a pre-taped interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, confirmed that those three and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) were under consideration.

“I haven’t made a final decision, but I have some ideas as to where we’re going,” Trump said. “And a little bit— We wanted to see what they’re doing to be honest, because you know it might make a difference. I don’t know, I’m not sure there would, but there are those saying Trump’s waiting to find out what’s happening with crooked Joe Biden.”

Trump said he would likely announce his running mate within the next week or 10 days, adding that he would “love to do it during the convention.”

“My people say that’s a little complicated,” Trump said, before again suggesting it could make for a media spectacle.

“Probably a little before the convention, but not much. It could even be during the convention,” he said. “I’d love to do it during the convention. I think it would be a very interesting build up and important for the convention.”

The RNC will take place next Monday-Thursday in Milwaukee, Wis.

One source close to the campaign said the former president could make the announcement at a Florida campaign rally on Tuesday, a Pennsylvania rally scheduled for Saturday, or, perhaps most likely, in a post on Truth Social.

“It could happen anytime this week. Could happen literally right up until the first day of the convention,” senior Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller said Monday morning on Fox News.
