Ted Lieu undergoes surgery following chest pain

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) underwent surgery Tuesday after experiencing chest pain and will be absent from Congress for the remainder of the week.

His office said in a statement Wednesday that Lieu was admitted to George Washington University Hospital Monday evening with chest pain but that tests showed no signs of a heart attack or heart damage. He later underwent a successful stent surgery after a CT scan showed partial blockage of an artery.

“He is in good spirits and plans to be back at work next week,” Marc Cevasco, Lieu’s chief of staff, said in the statement. 

“He is now recovering and will likely be discharged from the hospital later today. Congressman Lieu is deeply grateful to all the dedicated professionals at the [Office of Attending Physician] OAP and GW University Hospital,” he added. “He does plan to watch a lot of TV as he recovers.”

Lieu, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, has risen to national prominence with his frequent cable news appearances and scathing attacks on President Trump.

His absence come as the Judiciary Committee, along with several other committees, unveiled articles of impeachment against the president over his dealings with Ukraine.
