Jane Fonda to spend night in jail after climate protest in DC
Actress Jane Fonda is expected to spend Friday night in jail after being arrested for civil disobedience inside a Senate office building, where she participated in what has recently become a weekly climate change protest.
Fonda, 81, was among 46 individuals arrested Friday, according to U.S. Capitol Police. She is slated to appear Saturday morning at D.C. Superior Court.
{mosads}“We’re going to be arrested much more,” Fonda told reporters. “Depending on who we elect, we have to hold their feet to the fire. And that may mean getting arrested over and over and over again and putting our bodies on the line the way the indigenous people in Canada did. They have stopped pipelines just with their bodies.”
The Academy Award winner said she has not endorsed any of the Democratic presidential candidates vying to challenge President Trump next year. But she said there are a few who had the courage to address climate change.
When Fonda was asked about her message for Republican lawmakers, she said that they should consider the effect of climate change on their children and grandchildren.
“They will look back and ask, ‘What did you do to make a future that is livable for me?’” she said.

Fonda has been arrested several times last month, when she was joined by other Hollywood stars like Ted Danson of the “Good Place” and Sam Waterston, Fonda’s “Grace and Frankie” co-star who previously starred in “Law & Order.”
On Friday, Fonda promised to protest at the Capitol every week through January, when she will return to California to film the show “Grace and Frankie.”
