George Conway: Trial is helping Trump; showing his rallies would hurt him

George Conway, the attorney and political pundit, said Monday that former President Trump is benefiting politically from the hush money trial in New York — in part by taking attention away from his rallies.

“Actually if you look at it politically in my judgement, this is helping him politically … it is keeping him from being on television saying all the crazy things like in Wildwood the other day,” Conway said during CNN’s live coverage of Trump’s trial, making reference to his rally in New Jersey over the weekend.

Conway said he wished CNN “and all the other networks” would have provided continuous live coverage of Trump’s New Jersey rally “so everyone can see how crazy he is.”

“This is helping him politically by keeping the attention away from the nutty things he says and does,” Conway continued. “I think that’ll change if there ends up being a conviction, but I don’t think this necessarily hurts him politically at this moment, at this time.”

Trump is facing charges that he falsified business records in a bid to conceal a hush money payment to a porn actor around the time of the 2016 election.

The former president, the front-runner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, and his allies have said the charges against him in New York are political in nature and designed to keep him from winning the presidency again this fall.
