Orie won’t challenge Toomey
It looks like Pennsylvania state Sen. Jane Orie (R) won’t challenge Pat Toomey after all.
Last week, Orie met with NRSC officials to discuss challenging Toomey for the right to take on Arlen Specter–or Joe Sestak, I guess–in 2010. (The NRSC says they met with Orie out of courtesy and weren’t actively encouraging her to run.) Today, however, Orie officially bowed out.
“Pennsylvania is at a critical crossroads and facing a dire budget situation,” Orie said in a statement. “As this is my first time being in the budget negotiations, I must respect and fulfill my responsibilities to my constituents, the citizens of Pennsylvania and my caucus, who is standing solidly against new taxes. I must put any personal ambitions aside and focus on the crucial task at hand.”
Orie’s decision comes the same day that Toomey posted an impressive $1.6 million fundraising total for last quarter.
